An Indianapolis IN, man was returning home to his wife and two small children after running errands at around 9 p.m. on Wednesday of last week.
According police the man was approached from behind as he unlocked his front door to enter his residence.
The men, both dressed in gray and masked, had guns they used to force the man into the home. They then began to assault the man, pistol whipping, and shooting him in the leg.
The victim’s wife was knocked down by the home invaders, who then sent her to collect up any cash stored inside the home.
But she returned with a gun instead, firing at the two men and driving them away from the home.
Capt. Karen Arnett, of the Indianapolis PD, urged citizens to stay alert during this holiday season.
“What I want to encourage at this, and any, time of the year, just be aware of your surroundings.
If you’re going to go to the store, lock your doors, make sure you pay attention to anyone around your vehicle.”
When people are trying to commit crimes, they aren’t concerned about who is in the residence and who gets hurt. It’s a sad situation that you can’t be safe in your own home.”
The wounded father was taken to Ekenazi Health Hospital in stable condition.
Good home defense is not accidental. It is planned and prepared for both physically, such as running drills with your family, attending firearm classes, or maintaining locked doors, but also something which should be prepared for mentally.
Paying attention to what is going on around you is your first line of defense. Perhaps if the father in this story had noticed the two men lurking around his home, he might have been better prepared to handle the situation.
Fortunately, his wife was able to defend him with a firearm, or it could have turned out worse than it did.
